Since the wind has became a kind of clean, environmental and low cost energy resource, first large-scale wind farm will be built in Tibet to better use the abundant wind energy resource, according to local authority. Soon after Tibet finishes the great project, people travelling to Tibet have a chance to see many huge windmills in open ground.

The Longyuan Nagqu high altitude experimental wind farm is located in north Tibet's Nagqu Prefecture with planned installed capacity of 49.5 megawatts, according to the Office of Energy with Tibet Development and Reform Commission.

The wind farm has entered the preparatory stage of construction at present with planned production of 15 megawatts this year.

"There will be a greater demand of power after the construction of a logistics center in the southeast of the wind farm," said Liu Gen, project leader of the wind farm. "The wind farm will collect the rich wind power in Nagqu to generate electricity, which will further ease the electricity shortage in northern Tibet."

In addition to the wind farm in Nagqu, Tibet is also planning to construct a 49.5 MW wind farm in south Tibet's Lhoka Prefecture, according to the person in charge of Tibet's Office of Energy.
