10mln Tourists are expected to Tibet in 2012

Tibet received 8.43 million tourists during the period from January to November of 2011. This year, Tibet is expected to receive 10 million tourists with tourism revenue of 12 billion yuan, according to the 2012 regional tourism plan revealed in the chairman of the Tibet Autonomous Region, Padma Choling's speech at the 5th session of 9th Regional People's Congress of Tibet Autonomous Region held on January 9 in Lhasa.

As tourism is a pillar industry for Tibet, the regional authorities have set a target of attracting 15 million tourists in 2015 with tourism revenue of 18 billion yuan. Tibet received 8.5 million tourists and earned a tourism revenue of 9.5 billion yuan in 2011，an annual increase of 24.1 percent and 33 percent respectively.

Padma Choling said, "the municipal authorities will stick to enhance the development of tourism products, tourist reception capacity and service levels of the region. Support the development of rural tourism, encourage and guide farmers and herdsmen to engage in travel services, focus on tourism safety, and strive to break through the record of 10 million annual tourists reaching 12 billion yuan revenue in 2012."

Tibetan festivals have been the biggest attraction towards tourists from home and abroad. Especially the week-long Shoton Festival in summer, the peak travel season, alone drew 906,400 tourists to Tibet last year.
