Government establishments have carried out a feasibility study to confirm that it is safe to operate at such high altitudes. Construction of this highest airport is due to commence later this year and is scheduled to begin operation as soon as 2015. As a key project to further develop the infrastructure on the Tibetan Plateau, it will cost US$285 million according to the estimate.

The increase in flight services will assist Tibet’s airports deal with the 2.2 million passengers and 15,000 tonnes of Cargo it receives each year.

Nagqu’s District Administration Officer Tan Yongshou spoke on the upcoming structural infrastructure in place for the near future.

"Quinhai-Tibet Highway, Qinghai-Tibet Railway and this airport will form a multi-level traffic system in Nagqu," Tan Yongshou said.
