Tibetan women celebrate Xiannv Festival

Khada in hand, a group of festively dressed-up Tibetan women sang and danced in the outer courtyard of Jokhang Temple on Dec 1, joyfully celebrating the Xiannv Festival which falls on the 15th day of October on the Tibetan calendar.

Chang (a kind of wine made by highland barley) was poured by the delighted women from all around into a large size liquor bottle, and filled again the empty bottles with the Chang wine from the hose behind the bottle.

It represents that Chang has already been blessed by Pelden Lhamo, a woman from Tohlung Dechen in suburban Lhasa said. It is also proper ritual to drink Chang held on the palms and wet the forehead with the blessed liquor.

With religious celebrations throughout Tibet Autonomous Region, the Xiannv Festival is the festival for Tibetan women. On that day, women could ask any man for gifts, while the man with respect toward the festival could not refuse the request.
