Top-ranking Tibetan Buddhist Scripture Debate
The debating session for top Tibetan buddhist degree "tho ram pa" started on November 1, 2011 at the Yellow Temple (Huang Si Temple) in Beijing. ("Tho Ram Pa", a combined Tibetan term for "advanced" and "the learned and intelligent", is the modern degree conferral system for Tibetan Buddhism learners, exclusive of laymen, women). The debating test will last for six days from November 1, including a number of debating sessions on five major topics on Buddhist teachings, and other skills.
Thirty-one candidates took the Buddhist scripture debating test at the Advanced Tibetan Buddhism College of China for the competition of teaching qualifications. 12 monk candidates from monasteries from Tibet, Gansu, Qinghai and Yunan provinces were shortlisted for the "thorampa" degree exam, a high competitive test for the monastic doctorate title. All the monk candidates will take part in the final thesis defense on Nov.6, with the title and certificate granting ceremony followed on Nov. 9, 2011.
The examination is officaly launched and organized by the Advanced Tibetan Buddhism College of China, the country's top institution for Tibetan Buddhist studies. Sopa from Lhasa's Sera Monastery, most famous place for Buddhist scripture debating, said that more than a few well educated monks from monasteries nationwide are invited to serve as the examiner. Also prominent and learned lamas are present at the exam as the judging panel, to offer their authentic assessments, staff-in-charge at the college introduced.
