Before you plan a Lhasa to Kathmandu tour, it is neccessary to know the Friendship Highway connecting Lhasa and Kathmandu. It is the only international road in Tibet and starts from Lhasa, goes through Shigatse, Tingri, Nyalam, Zhangmu, friendship Bridge, ends at Kathmanhdu. The total length of the Friendship Highway is 943km, 829km of which is in Tibet. Tibet section is well paved while the road condition in Nepal is still relatively rough.
Lhasa to Kathmandu overland route is a world famous classic tourist route attracting countless tourists to go through the road from Lhasa to Kathmandu each year. The trip usually takes 6-7 days, staying 2-3 days in Lhasa before you depart to Kathmandu. On the way, you can visit beautiful Yamdrok Lake that is one of the three holy lakes in Tibet, the Karuola Glaciers lying on the roadside, the Pelkor Chode Monastery with unique style taking in several sects of Tibetan Buddhism, the famed Tashilhunpo known as the Panchen Lama's seat, the Sakya Monastery reputed as the "Second Dunhuang" for its magic murals. Of course, you can make a detour to drive 100km south of Friendship Highway to visit Everest Base Camp and the world's highest monastery, 5,000 meters Rongbuk Monastery.
