What to Pack for Tibet Tour?

Lhasa River

It’s absolutely necessary to know what to bring to Tibet before tour starts.

One of the most common questions we were asked is what should I pack for Tibet? Yeah, it has never been an easy task to decide what to bring in Tibet tour. Considering Tibet weather and climate, I have made a conclusion about top things to pack for Tibet trip, Tibet trekking packing list as well as packing for Tibet overland tour.

Top Things to Pack for Tibet Trip

Tibet travel permits and your passport- the most important ones
You passport, Chinese Visa and Tibet travel permits are the indispensable documents for your Tibet tour. No matter which way you choose to get to Tibet, those papers must be checked before you board on Tibet train or flights to Tibet.

Backpack- the lighter the better
Please avoid visiting Tibet with big load and just bring the things you really need. Generally speaking, a 45 liter backpack is enough to hold all your belongings. But if you plan to trek Tibet, a large backpack, a smaller one as well as a waist bag will make your Tibet trekking tour perfect. The larger one can carry all your things on the way to Tibet. The smaller one can be used for daily activities in Tibet tour and can also be put into the big one when necessary. The waist bag is for bringing some small and important things with you.

Clothing-the warmer the better
Taking Tibet weather and climate into consideration, I suggest you to bring down coats and sweaters all the way. As for Everest Base Camp Trekking and Kailash Kora, you’d better prepare two sets of quick-drying underwear. When sweat glued to your body, it would take away the heat very quickly and things may become troublesome and dangerous. Meanwhile, please note that it rains a lot in Tibet July and August, all your equipment should be waterproof.

Footwear- preferred hiking boots
Of course, we need a good pair of shoes while traveling, especially in Tibet. I strongly advise you to wear waterproof hiking boots for they can protect your feet from stones and sand as well as keep warm. Some hotels in Tibet won’t provide slippers, thus a pair of sandals is needed.

Sunglasses-protecting eyes
Strong ultraviolet radiation and snow reflection can hurt our eyes easily, so a good pair of sunglasses is necessary.

Skin care products-avoiding sunburn
Lip balm, sun block, skin cream and other skin care products are essential to protect you from sunburn that can occur easily at these high elevations. By the way, wearing a long-sleeved T-shirt and a sun hat with wide brim is also useful to avoid sunburn.

Daily necessaries
It’s always easy to buy daily articles in Lhasa and Shigatse. But for some remote areas, you’d better bring your own items, like water bottle, toothbrush, toothpaste, slippers, towel, soap, some disposable underpants and other toiletries.

Medical supplies
You’d better bring some medicines for emergency cases, such as Yunnan Baiyao and Band-aids for wounds, Aspirin for headache and so on. As for acute mountain sickness, please refer to how to avoid acute altitude sickness in Tibet. Another important thing is to consult your family doctor before traveling Tibet.

Cash and credit cards
Since credit cards are not so popular in Tibet, I recommend you to prepare enough cash in different denominations.

Map and compass
In case of poor signal or getting lost, the map and compass can do you a great favor in traveling overland to Tibet.
