March 2, 2014 sees Tibetan New Year, or Losar, a grand manifestation of the Tibetan culture. Hereunder we pick some unique Tibetan festival items.
Butter sculptures
Butter sculptures, the largest and most elaborate New Year stockings are made around the time when the Tibetan New Year arrives. They are giant monuments built of yak butter or ghee (clarified butter) mixed with fat and wax. Illuminated with colored lamps and decorated with colorful dyes, the intricate sculptures commemorate various traditional stories and fables.
Highland barley seedlings
Highland barley seedlings are regarded as both interior decorations and bless for a harvest year. Usually they are grown one month before the New Year comes.
Prayer flags
The five-colored prayer-flags are impressive to those who have first been to Tibet. Those flags are hung on peaks, mountain passes, or by roads and monasteries. They are also named after the scripture on each flag. Blowing in the wind, they are also called sutra streamers.
