Prayer Flag Trees in Tibet

Prayer Flag Trees in Tibet

Tibetans have started to make prayer flag trees to pray for good harvests and good luck in the coming Tibetan New Year (or Losar).

The “prayer flag tree” is made of tree branches sewed with multicolored sutra streamers in the sequence of blue, white, red, yellow and green from the top to the bottom. The sequence of different colors cannot be shifted since they symbolize the blue sky, white clouds, red fires, green waters and yellow earth, and carry the good wishes of people.

Every year Tibetans put up prayer flag trees on the roof to replace the faded old ones in order to pray for good harvest, good luck and happiness in the coming year.
