How to Get to Kathmandu from Giyrong Port

The long-awaited official announcement of opening of Gyirong Port finally came as a great surprise. Due to the influence of Nepali earthquake in 2015, the Zhangmu border was completely flattened while the access from Nepal to Tibet via Gyirong was also severely crippled. With over a year and a half of continuous renovation, the facilities of Gyirong Port were finally restored and put to use again. The whole distance from Kathmandu to Rasuwa Bridge of Gyirong Port, the China-Nepal border, is about 160 km. It takes about 6 hours by bus. The bus will make a stopover on the way and passengers can have a simple meal on the way. The one-way bus fare is about 2500 rupees.

After the bus departures, if you are forced to return back to the departure station or you are detained on the way by some irresistible factors, such as road obstacles, landslide and temporary closure of ports, the ticket fee will not be refunded to passengers.  In the event of a known obstacle before departure, the departure time will be postponed to another day or passengers can choose to get a refund. In addition, passengers’ belongings must be in conformity with the provisions. Passengers mustn’t carry excess articles which are in the list of Chinese government’s and Nepal’s declare restrictions. And, they mustn’t smuggle any articles that are prohibited in or out by China and Nepal.

The car driven between Kathmandu to Gyirong Port is “MAHINDRASCORPIO” sport utility vehicle which are rented from tourism companies and other car rental agencies. “MAHINDRASCORPIO” sport utility vehicle is the most popular car with excellent performances in Nepal, which is covered the insurance based on Nepal’s road laws and regulations. The amount of accidental injury medical insurance is 250,000 Nepalese currency and the special limit is 500,000 Nepalese currency.

It has been very convenient for tourists to travel between China and Nepal since the bus linked between Gyirong Port and Kathmandu opened on November 2, 2015. Tourists who plan to travel to and fro between Gyirong Port and Kathmandu can reserve tickets of this bus line. The following is the information about the departure schedule, travel time, ticket fee, purchasing method and other related notice.

Departure Schedule

The bus departures from Gyirong Port, China to Kathmandu, Nepal every Monday, Wednesday and Friday; the bus departures from Kathmandu, Nepal to Gyirong Port, China every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. The departure times in Thamel, Kathmandu are respectively 3 am and 4 am of local time; the departure time at Rasuwa Bridge is 12 am. The roads from Gyirong port to Kathmandu are in general condition. The departure time may be changed according to passenger flow volume.

Method to Get a Ticket

Tourists, with valid entry and exit permits and Nepal visa, can buy tickets at the places of departure in Rasuwa Bridge or in Thamel, Kathmandu.

Ticket Fee

The single ticket of the bus linked between Gyirong and Kathmandu is 2500 rupees. What you should be informed is that you will not get the refund if you are forced to return back to the departure station or you are detained on the way because of the road barriers, landslides, temporary port closure and other irresistible factors. If these factors which cause road obstacles are known before departure, you can get a refund or you will be arranged to take a bus on another day.

Due to Chinese frontier inspection office doesn’t allow Nepal’s car to enter, the ticket fee from Kathmandu to Gyirong Port does not include the fee from Rasuwa Bridge to Gyironggou. The distance from Rasuwa Bridge to Gyironggou is 24 km. Please notice that the buses from Gyirong to Lhasa and other cities in Tibet all departure at Gyironggou, not at Gyirong Port.

In addition, it is reported that the bus from Gyirong Port to Kathmandu will pass through Langdang protected areas and Nepal Tourism Administration Bureau may charge passengers 3390 rupees. This is the entry and exit fee that is valid for several days with a formal invoice.

Travel Time

The travel time for a single way from Gyirong Port to Kathmandu is about 6 hours. If you take a bus in the morning at Gyirong Port, you can arrive in Kathmandu at noon. The bus will stop for one or two times on the way and you can have a simple meal at the rest stop.

Notice for Tourists’ Belongings

Articles that passengers carry must be personal, moderate and reasonable, which are in compliance with the regulations of China and Nepal. In addition, passengers can’t carry excess items which are listed in declare restrictions of China and Nepal or smuggle items that are prohibited in or out by China and Nepal. Visitors must keep the corresponding invoice for souvenirs, the certification for non-cultural relics, Permit of the Ministry of Forestry and other documents in case that the military police will inspect the articles on the way.
