Drak Yerpa, located in Dagze County of Lhasa with at an altitude of around 4,000 meters, is one of the fanes constructed under the order of Songtsen Gampo, the 7th century Tibetan king, as a gift to his concubine, and later became one of the four main monasteries for meditation in Tibet.
Famous for its integration of grottoes, Drak Yerpa consists of a monastery and more than 80 meditation caves.
As per a popular folk song in Tibet, “Lhasa is the holy spirit axis of Tibet. Yerpa is the spirit axis of Lhasa. If you visit Lhasa without going to Yerpa, it is like making clothes without collar.”
