Black-neck Cranes–The Secular Life Of The Plateau Dancers

Qinghai Lake

In 1867, the Russian explorer Nikolai Pezhevalsky found for the 1st time at Qinghai Lake the blakc-neck crane that is the only species of its kind in the world living at plateau swamps, rivers, lakes and river shoals at an altitude of 2500-5000 meters. This is also a crane found at the most recent time. By now, there are altogether 15 species of cranes.

So far China has 15 black-neck crane natural reserves, and among them 3 are the state level natural reserve. Qinghai Crane Natural Reserve, Xining Crane Natural Reserve and Beijing Zoo have established cooperative relations with International Crane Foundation and successfully conducted artificial breeding. At the present, the total population of the wild black-crane have risen to 7,000. However, this is still a very dangerous number if protection does not continue.
